This position is a Reserving position that will be filled in Scottsdale, AZ and will report to the AVP, P&C Actuarial Reserving.
In addition to the responsibilities listed on the job posting, specific responsibilities include quarterly reserve analyses/appraisals, monthly booking processes and reporting, and participating in special studies designed to understand trends and drivers underlying results. Communicates insights and results from analyses in a clear and concise manner to leadership and builds strong working relationships across Reserving and with a variety of key business partners including senior leaders.
The candidate must have strong leadership skills, problem solving skills, actuarial reserving technical skills and communication skills.
JOB SUMMARY: Assists the department head in the timely completion of tasks using sound actuarial techniques and judgment. Acts as a representative of the department in a variety of situations as required. May supervise a unit performing actuarial functions. Keeps current with advanced actuarial methodologies and insurance concepts through reading, training sessions and work assignments. Estimates future loss and premium results for ratemaking or reserving purposes using actuarial methodologies. Successfully completes a wide variety of actuarial assignments.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Retrieves and manipulates data; accountable for suitability and accuracy of data. 2. Continues to develop knowledge of advanced actuarial methodologies. Evaluates alternative methods for use; develops methods to deal with new situations. 3. Conducts analyses that adhere to actuarial standards or practice: selects appropriate data sources and methods, makes assumptions, recognizes considerations and develops recommendations. 4. Accountable for documentation of assumptions, methods, sources, considerations; organizes documents. Adheres to CAS standards of practice. 5. Accountable for resolving unreasonable results/non-optimal solutions using experience and professional judgment. 6. Accountable for communications that are suitable to the audience, concise, logical organizational and grammatically correct with minimum use of actuarial and insurance jargon. Sees that context reflects appropriate analysis. 7. Develops work plans to ensure timely completion of assigned tasks; monitors progress against work plan and takes action to meet plan. 8. Accountable for ensuring that appropriate Peer Tech Reviews are completed; responsible for quality of results of entire work product. Participates in interdisciplinary and interview team activities as assigned. 9. Demonstrates satisfactory examination progress per the Casualty Actuarial Program. 10. Trains associates on standard work processes. May define training requirements and oversee training by others. 11. As requested, oversees presentation preparation or makes presentations to internal/external audiences. 12. When serving in a management role, is responsible for management of associates including: performance management, salary planning and administrations, training and development, workflow planning, hiring and placement, and disciplinary actions. 13. Professionally represents company's position with regulators, auditors, external vendors; exercises good judgments and keeps manager informed. Negotiates within defined parameters as assigned.
RELATIONSHIP: Actuary, Senior Actuary, or Actuarial Officer . May have 0-5 direct reports.
EXPERIENCE/ KNOWLEDGE: Four or more years experience in an actuarial-related work area. knowledge of advanced mathematics and statistical concepts. Sound knowledge of actuarial methods/concepts, insurance terminology and products; evidence of familiarity with legal requirements in area of assignment. Must display command of procedures and methodologies employed in area of assignment.
EDUCATION: Bachelors degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, economics or related field with a strong quantitative orientation. Must have successfully achieved the Associate Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS).
SKILLS: Demonstrated work product accuracy. Effective oral/written communication skills; Demonstrated ability to comprehend actuarial concepts and other advanced statistical concepts; Demonstrated ability to think logically and perform actuarial methods in a timely manner. Ability to effectively operate personal computer and related spreadsheets and data base software. Leadership ability when functioning in a management role.
